Some of these seasons are the famous "Buoy 10" Salmon season at the mouth of the Columbia River which offers opportunities to fish for both Coho & Chinook Salmon on the Coast of Oregon & Washington at Astoria, Oregon & Ilwaco, Washington.

There is also the Spring Chinook Salmon season on the Columbia & Willamette Rivers, Rogue River, & Tillamook Bay.

In the fall there is fishing for Big King Salmon (or Fall Chinook as they are known here in the Pacific Northwest) on the Oregon & Washington coasts at popular Salmon fishing locations such as Tillamook Bay & Portland, Oregon.

The species of Salmon found in Oregon & Washington include Chinook Salmon (King Salmon), Sockeye Salmon, Coho Salmon (Silver Salmon), & Chum Salmon.

The two main species of Salmon pursued by anglers are of course the Chinook & the Coho Salmon . The Coho Salmon ( Silver Salmon ), Chum Salmon, & Sockeye Salmon all have just one run every year.

Coho fishing begins with their upriver migration beginning in July or August & they continue migrating back to the spawning beds through the fall months.

The Spring Chinook Salmon start entering the rivers as early as late January & continue into June. The Springer's, as they are referred to, are by far the most highly prized fish for eating of any of the Salmon found in North America.

The best Spring Chinook fishing is from mid March to mid May. The Fall Chinook which are usually the biggest Salmon that we have in Oregon & Washington start their upstream run in the late summer months & usually run through December or early January depending on the river system. Each system has slightly different run timing. The Fall Salmon season gets going good by late September or early October.

The Tule Chinook and Upriver Brights begin their runs in July & August with the opening of Buoy 10 in Astoria and Ilwaco, Washington. These Salmon move into the Columbia River system & continue to offer Salmon fishing opportunities into October or November.

The Tule Chinook Salmon are big fish but are of lesser quality for eating. They are still good when bright in color but rapidly start to turn dark when they get to fresh water. The Upriver Brights are chrome bright in color & are excellent eating.

The so called, Summer Chinook are found in some of the coastal river systems as well as the Columbia River & are more than likely just late Springer's or early fall fish.

Fishing techniques for Salmon in the Pacific Northwest & catching Salmon vary widely depending on which river, water conditions, river flows, & time of the year.

Fun Rides For All Ages In Portland

A must see/do list in Portland would include all 3 of our trains/trams/and trolleys.

Streetcar History

The City of Portland, Oregon is noted for the dramatic revitalization of its downtown core. In the 1960s, Portland, like many other cities throughout the U.S., was threatened by loss of residents, businesses and capital. Suburban housing developments, shopping areas, and business parks were draining the vitality from the city center.

The "Pill Hill" tram as it is called connects the southern water front activities with the medical hospitals and clinics located directly above that area.

They run about every 12 minutes and you can do the complete up and down trip in about 1/2 hour. It soars 600 ft above the rooftops and offers vistas never seen before. If you are afraid of heights you had better have someone to hang on to but it will be worth the trip.

Our infamous "Zooliner" train runs around Washington Park and the Zoo. It is a scaled down replica and is open aired. This is a favorite ride for adults and children and not to be missed during you trip up the hill to the Zoo!

Today, however, Portland’s central city is one of the most admired in North America. Many things contributed to this turnaround, but one key factor was an emphasis on transit and cooperative planning for transportation and land uses. Some examples of changes in the 60s and 70s that led to Portland’s status as a highly livable city are:

1. Establishment of TriMet, a public regional transit agency with new buses and a 12-block downtown transit mall

2. Elimination of a freeway along the Willamette River where a popular public park now sits.

3. A decision not to build a freeway that would have destroyed housing in established Portland neighborhoods.

4. State and local support for MAX, the regional light rail service which now links suburban communities more than 33 miles apart to each other as well as to downtown Portland. A 5.5-mile spur to the Portland International Airport opened in fall of 2001 and a 5.8-mile spur opened north to EXPO in May 2004.
